Abingdon, VA is a charming town with deep historical and cultural roots. Originally established in the late 1700's, Abingdon was originally known as "Wolf Hills." The town has played host to such notable characters as Dr. Thomas Walker, Colonel William Byrd and Daniel Boone.A town with a rich artistic history, Abingdon is home to Barter Theatre, the State Theatre of Virginia, established in 1933 by Robert Porterfield. Over the years, the Barter has hosted many famous playwrights and actors, including Noel Coward, Tennessee Williams, Thornton Wilder, George Bernard Shaw, Ernest Borgnine, Hume Cronyn, Gregory Peck, and Ned Beatty.
