Elizabethton, TN
Elizabethton is a charming Northeast Tennessee town with a rich history. The Watauga Settlement at Sycamore Shoals (in what is now Elizabethton) was the first permanent settlement outside the United States' original 13 colonies. The settlement was also the first to employ the majority-rule system of American democracy, and was home to many prominent military officials, legislators, and members of the Constitutional Convention.Sycamore Shoals, situated at the junction of the Doe and Watauga Rivers, was also home to the Transylvania Purchase, the largest private land deal in U.S. history. The Transylvania Purchase, which marked the beginning of westward expansion, granted all lands in the Cumberland Watershed, extending to the Kentucky River, to the settlers.
